Dr. Thomas Boving is a Professor at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston with a joint appointment to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Geosciences. He received his PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources Management from the University of Arizona, Tucson and a master’s degree (“Diploma”) in Geology from the University of Tübingen, Germany. Boving worked for several years as an Environmental Hydrogeologist for an international consulting company in Stuttgart, Germany. His areas of expertise are the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, including stormwater runoff, and international water projects.
Dr. Boving’s field word has been funded from agencies such as the World Bank, US EPA, or the US Dept. of Defense. He led water supply and treatment projects in rural communities in developing countries, such as India, Jordan, and Indonesia. He has extensively published in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals and has produced dozens of technical reports/white papers. Boving holds a patent for the extraction of pollutants from groundwater.
During 20 years of experience, Boving has supervised a number of field projects involving the installation of riverbank filtration (RBF) wells, interpretation aquifer test data, and excavation of contaminated soil and underground storage tanks. Dr. Boving is the Lead Researcher of the Rhode Island Stormwater Technology Demonstration (RISTD) facility on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. He served as an expert witness in legal cases concerning surface and groundwater contamination.
